Do NOT Underestimate Menstrual Cramps! Seek Help from Pelvic Ultrasound

Many women become accustomed to menstrual cramps and menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). They often choose to endure them, or have tried all sorts of health-nurturing remedies but only found them relieving the discomfort and not curing the cause. If one ignores the warnings for a long time and only seeks medical attention after feeling acute pain due to sudden cyst rupture, severe discomfort or fainting from anaemia, the condition may have deteriorated to the point where surgery is required.

Many gynaecological conditions are asymptomatic. However, common conditions such as endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids may develop into malignant tumours and therefore should not be overlooked. Pelvic ultrasound can be used to examine the uterus and ovaries for the risk of various diseases such as cysts, fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrioma and ovarian cancer.

There are two types of pelvic ultrasound: transabdominal and transvaginal. Transabdominal ultrasound requires drinking a lot of water to fill up the bladder before the test. This method allows the doctor to observe the ovaries for possible large fibroids and tumours, but it is not suitable for women with thick abdominal skin or menopause. Transvaginal ultrasound is more accurate but is not suitable for women with no sexual experience.

Target Group for Pelvic Ultrasound

Pelvic ultrasound is recommended every six months to a year if you experience any of the following conditions.

  1. Frequent urination or urge to urinate.

  2. Swelling or a suspicious palpable lump in the lower abdomen.

  3. Abnormal vaginal bleeding, excessive menstrual bleeding, or menstrual cramps.

  4. Patients with uterine myoma, fibroids, or ovarian cysts.

  5. Failure to confirm the normal position of the intra-uterine contraceptive device.

  6. People who have not received a gynaecological examination within 6 months
