Tangled Hair? What Can You Do About It?

Tangled hair and its knots may be driving you crazy every time you pick up the comb to brush your hair. Ignoring it will only lead to messier hair whereas forceful brushing could destroy the strands. What causes your hair to tangle? How can we deal with those pesky knots? Here are some tips on how to take care of tangled hair and how to prevent it!

What Causes Hair Tangling?

Tangles are caused when hair looks yellow, damaged and opens up due to a lack of nutrients. Once a couple of strands are stuck together, the knot can become bigger and harder to remove. Further, lack of oil and moisture in the hair can make it dry, intertwined and hard to comb. When hair is not dried enough, the split ends will be the worst hit and get tangled easily. For longer hair, dry and split ends that are not trimmed regularly can also cause tangles.

How To Detangle Your Hair?

Begin from the bottom

If the hair is badly intertwined from the middle to the bottom section, combing it straight through may leave it all tangled up in one piece. Comb some inches at the bottom and work your way upwards gently. After making sure the knots are out of the way, comb down the hair from the roots in one go.

Use wide-toothed comb

First use a wide-tooth comb to go through your hair with less friction, so that you can gently untangle the knots. Then use a fine-tooth comb to smooth out the hair.

Apply hair care products

If hair is tangled, wet it first and gently rub it with a hair conditioner. Those products contain oils that effectively detangle hair. You can gently comb out knots with your hands.

What Can You Do To Prevent Knots?

Brush your hair before washing

If you do not comb out the tangles beforehand, you may damage your hair even more if you try to untangle it by hand when it's wet.

Apply hair masks or other deep-conditioning products

Dry hair is one of the causes of tangles. If a conditioner does not help, try using a deep conditioning product such as a hair mask.

Don’t rub your hair after washing

After washing your hair, gently dry your hair with a towel. Do not rub your hair as it can cause tangled hair.

Comb hair and use hair care products before blow-drying

Before blow-drying, use a wide-tooth comb to smooth the hair from the ends and then start working towards the roots. If your hair gets tangled when wet, do not use a fine comb on your hair, but gently rub out the tangles with hair oil and then use a wide-tooth comb to smooth them out.

Let the airflow match the hair direction

If you blow-dry your hair upwards, the hair cuticles will be damaged, making your hair even drier and more prone to tangling. When drying your hair, make sure the air flowing from top to bottom, in the direction of the hair's growth, and until it is completely dry, so that it is smooth and tangle-free.
