Causes of Vulvar Itching

It’s believed that many women have felt the pain of itching in their private parts, and often they are too embarrassed to seek advice or medical help. Genital skin is very sensitive, and there are many possible causes of itching on the vulva, for example, infections and allergies. Common causes are as follows:

1.Hygienic issues

It is important to keep your genitals clean and hygienic. Some women use shower gels, soaps or feminine hygiene products to repeatedly wash their private parts. However, excessive washing or the use of chemicals may affect the pH level of the intimate area, causing burning and discomfort. For this reason, many professionals recommend using only warm water for cleaning. After going to the toilet, wipe from the front to the back of the vulva to avoid bringing bacteria from the anus to the vagina.

2.Clothing and laundry

Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants or skirts. Tight-fitting clothing creates a lack of ventilation, and moisture, sweat, and bacteria can easily irritate the vaginal skin, which can lead to folliculitis or infected cysts. Ensure the underwear and any clothing that come into contact with the vulva are rinsed well. Do not use fabric softener on undergarments because the chemicals will stay in the fabric, causing irritation to the vulval skin.

3.Sexual intercourse

When the vulva is itchy, do not use lubricants or petroleum jelly. Avoid intercourse when there is pain in the genitals. Gently apply ice or frozen gel pack wrapped in a towel onto the vulval skin to relieve burning sensation, if any, after intercourse. Urinate to prevent infection and rinse the vulva with cool water immediately after intercourse.

4.Physical activities

Avoid exercise that puts direct pressure on the vulva e.g. cycling. Gently apply a frozen gel pack wrapped in a towel onto the vulval skin to relieve symptoms after exercise. Don't swim in highly chlorinated swimming pools and avoid the use of hot tubs. Remove wet bathing suits and sports clothes promptly to avoid irritation of the vulva skin, which may aggravate the itching discomfort.

5.Everyday living

The sensation of the genital area can be affected by emotion. Symptoms can appear worse at times of stress. Adequate rest, listening to soft music and performing stretching exercise can help to lessen the severity of vulval discomfort.

These are some of the common causes of itching in women's vulvar areas. If the itch persists despite attempts to change your lifestyle, it is important to seek medical help and arrange a gynaecological check-up.
