The Truth about Wrinkles: Busting 7 Common Myths

When our skin loses elasticity and starts to sag, wrinkles can form on every part of the face. These flaws make us look older than our actual age, making them the enemy of every woman! No worries, we’ve got you covered with tips to fight against wrinkles. Let’s check them out!

Q1: Is moisturising the skin enough to prevent wrinkles?

Moisturising is an essential part of a skincare routine, but it alone may not be enough to prevent wrinkles. There are two types of lines on our skin: fine lines and wrinkles. Fine lines are superficial lines that only show up when making facial expressions, while wrinkles can be seen even when the face is at rest, such as nasolabial folds.

Fine lines are generally caused by a shallow collapse of the epidermis, and can often be smoothed out with proper moisturisation. However, as wrinkles affect the dermis, they cannot be easily reversed with skincare products and have to be managed by medical aesthetic treatments. To avoid wrinkles, you should start taking care of your skin around the age of 25 by moisturising more, wearing sunscreen, and quitting smoking and drinking.

Q2: Will I get many wrinkles just because my parents have them too?

While genetics do play a part in the formation of wrinkles, taking good care of your skin can help fight against ageing and those pesky creases. This includes building a good skincare routine with regular beauty treatments, quitting smoking, practising sun protection and exercising moderately.

Ageing can be caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. While you can do nothing with intrinsic factors related to genetics, extrinsic factors can be prevented with early and diligent skincare.

Q3: Can taking collagen supplements prevent wrinkle formation?

Taking oral collagen supplements is effective in combating ageing. Yet, after being digested and absorbed in the gut, collagen will be distributed to different parts of the body, with only a small amount allocated to the face. So it’s hard to target wrinkles with those products.

Q4: Does sleeping on my side give me wrinkles?

Some people think that when sleeping on their side and stomach, their face will be pressed into their pillow and form wrinkles. But in fact, there’s no sufficient evidence to support this claim. We tend to unconsciously change our sleep positions every 20 minutes, so this belief is not valid. However, poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation do weaken our metabolism and ultimately result in poorer skin health and wrinkle formation.

Q5: Can diet prevent wrinkle formation?

Yes! According to research in the Netherlands, women eating more fruits, vegetables and fish have fewer wrinkles while those eating more meat, sugar, fat and alcohol have more wrinkles. Ladies can also eat more raspberries, green tea and foods rich in lutein such as egg yolk, broccoli, dark green vegetables, pumpkins and corn to combat damage from UV light. This can ultimately reduce wrinkle formation as UV light is one of the main causes of wrinkles.

Q6: Can facial exercises prevent wrinkle formation?

Not really. It may even make things worse as doing these facial exercises is actually making facial expressions, which means there’s a chance of deepening expression lines. You can massage your face instead to relieve tension in the facial muscles.

Q7: Are medical aesthetic treatments the only way to get rid of wrinkles?

As we mentioned before, skincare products can be effective in preventing ageing and improving fine lines. Some common products with vitamins C and E, retinol (vitamin A derivative), and various peptides can effectively stimulate cell growth and help reduce fine lines.

Yet, once your skin has sagged to the point where deep wrinkles have taken up residence, you'll soon realize that slathering on any old skincare brand won't do much good. Your best bet at that point is to go for a medical procedure! If you let your skin go south, those wrinkles will only dig in deeper, making it tougher to bounce back. So when those pesky lines start to appear, it's high time to take action and try to recapture that youthful glow!
