Suffering from Non-Stop Tears? You Might Have Dry Eyes

Causes of dry eyes

Dry eyes are caused by insufficient tear production. Tears are composed of water, oil, and mucus, and their balance is the key to maintaining the moisture of the eyes. If we lack any of these components, our eyes will feel dry. The causes of dry eyes include:

Age: As we age, the secretion function of our eyes gradually declines, leading to dry eyes.

Environmental factors: Dry climate, air pollution, and prolonged computer use can also lead to dry eyes.

Medications: Certain medications such as antihistamines and diuretics can also cause dry eyes.

Eye diseases: Eye diseases such as conjunctivitis and keratitis can also lead to dry eyes.

Wearing contact lenses for a long time: Contact lenses can affect the lubrication of the eye surface, leading to dry eyes.

Treatment for dry eyes

Artificial tears: You can drop them on the eyeball surface to supplement tears, hence alleviating the symptoms of dry eyes. However, you should use them under a doctor’s instructions and not buy eye drops or artificial tears on your own.

Anti-inflammatory drugs: For some dry eyes caused by eye diseases, doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain and inflammation.

Surgical treatment: In some severe cases, doctors may recommend surgical treatment, such as approved minimally invasive surgery to alleviate the symptoms.

Some lifestyle habits can also prevent the occurrence of dry eyes, such as:

-Drink plenty of water to keep the body well hydrated.

-Avoid prolonged use of computers or other digital gadgets, and take a break every now and then to rest your eyes.

-Use an air humidifier to keep indoor air moist.

-Avoid exposure to dry, windy, or smoky environments.

-Maintain a balanced diet with adequate amounts of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E to promote eye health.

We should actively take preventive and treatment measures to protect our eye health so that it won’t interfere with our work and daily life. If you experience symptoms of dry eyes, be sure to seek timely medical attention to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.
