As our bodies age, changes and degeneration in physical functions are inevitable, and our eyes are no exception. Many eye conditions exhibit no obvious symptoms in their early stages, leading individuals to attribute discomfort to lack of sleep or temporary irritation from dust particles, disregarding the potential presence of eye diseases. Consequently, they miss the opportune moment for ideal treatment, risking vision impairment, blindness, and interference with daily life.

Common Eye Conditions in Hong Kong's Elderly Population:

1. Presbyopia: Starting from middle age, the ciliary muscles of the eye weaken, and the lens loses its elasticity, making it difficult to focus accurately on near objects. This leads to blurred vision or difficulty seeing clearly.

2. Dry Eye Syndrome: Degeneration of tear gland secretion, excessive evaporation of tears, and eye infections can cause dryness in the eyes. Patients may experience eye irritation, dryness, itching, light sensitivity, wind sensitivity, and even redness or inflammation of the eyes.

3. Epiphora: Excessive tear production, tear duct obstruction, foreign body entry, or inflammation can result in watery or teary eyes.

4. Cataracts: The leading cause of blindness worldwide, cataracts cause the normally clear and transparent lens inside the eye to become cloudy. This leads to blurry and decreased vision, weakened visual contrast, and in severe cases, blindness.

5. Glaucoma: Increased pressure within the eye damages the retina and optic nerve. Patients gradually experience narrowing of their visual field, starting from the periphery. Without treatment, vision deteriorates over time and can eventually lead to complete blindness.

6. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD): The macula is responsible for perceiving colors and object sizes. With age, it gradually deteriorates, leading to decreased central vision. This condition can cause visual distortions, such as straight lines appearing curved, objects appearing distorted or blurry, and the presence of dark spots. Ultimately, it can result in permanent vision impairment.

These eye conditions often develop gradually over time, with signs sometimes becoming apparent during middle age. Regular eye examinations are crucial for monitoring eye health and early identification of potential risks associated with these conditions.

However, this scheme is scheduled to conclude next month.
