Elderly Health Care Vouchers: More Than Just Doctor Visits – Discover Over 20 Beneficial Uses!

Since its launch in 2009, the Elderly Health Care Voucher Scheme (EHVS) has been providing eligible seniors aged 65 and above with a yearly allocation of $2,000 in health care vouchers. This initiative aims to empower seniors to make better use of private healthcare services while alleviating the strain on public healthcare resources.

In 2023 alone, Hong Kong witnessed transactions involving health care vouchers as high as 5.22 million, with approximately 98% of eligible senior citizens utilizing these vouchers. The total claimed amount reached around HK$3.28 billion. While the majority of seniors utilized the vouchers for treating occasional ailments such as colds, flu, and gastrointestinal issues, only a small portion used them for monitoring and preventive services related to chronic diseases.

Utilize Them Across 14 Service Categories!

Many seniors are under the impression that health care vouchers can only be used for doctor visits and treatment purposes. However, starting from April 2023, the government expanded the EHVS to encompass 14 service categories. In addition to therapeutic services, preventive and rehabilitative services such as health assessments, acupuncture, massage therapy, prescription eyewear, and hearing aid fittings are now eligible for health care voucher coverage. It's important to note that some services have usage limits, such as vision examinations, which are capped at HK$2,000 every 2 years.
