Why should we clean our scalp?

Our skin needs cleansing, care and nourishment – our scalp is no exception. Many people wash their hair every day, but they may be cleansing their scalp in the wrong way which causes the accumulation of dust and dirt. This may clog the hair follicles and impede the scalp’s nutrient absorption, leading to thin and short hair that may fall off easily.

If you wish to have healthy and gorgeous hair, you should first build a solid foundation by cleansing the scalp, and then start to resolve various hair problems. As general shampoos on the market can only clean the hair and scalp on the surface, a deep cleansing treatment is needed to remove dirt and dead skin cells in the deep layers. This is the only effective way to thoroughly cleanse your scalp.

Does our scalp need exfoliation?

The stratum corneum of the scalp forms a natural protective barrier. When the scalp is not cleaned properly, the corneocytes cannot shed through metabolism, but new keratinocytes keep moving to the stratum corneum. The corneocytes will pile up gradually and harm the health of hair follicles.

Deep cleansing of the scalp does not mean getting rid of all corneocytes, but moderately softening and removing the dead cells to maintain oil-water balance. Over-cleansing the scalp will lead to a thinner stratum corneum and poorer ability to seal in moisture, resulting in a dry and tight scalp with redness, itchiness and sensitivity. Under-cleansing can lead to thickening stratum corneum and clogged hair follicles, resulting in weak hair strands and hair loss.

Therefore, you should seek help from specialists for proper deep cleansing treatments, or else hair problems will come thick and fast due to disrupted metabolism.

How should we care for our scalp every day?

Use warm water to wash your hair

You should use warm water around 33°C to 37°C for shampooing. Hot water exceeding this temperature range may accelerate the evaporation of moisture from the scalp and hair, causing dryness, split ends and even burns.

Build a right scalp care routine

Before washing your hair, you should first rub the shampoo on your palms until it becomes foamy. Do not directly apply shampoo to your scalp.

Wrap your hair with a towel to dry the moisture. Do not rub your hair too hard, otherwise, it may become fragile and damaged.

When blow-drying your hair, you should keep the dryer at 130°C and 20cm from your hair to prevent heat damage.

Deep cleanse your scalp regularly

You are advised to use hair care products or receive deep cleansing treatments regularly to gently remove the dirt on the scalp, restoring clean scalp and hair follicles.

How often should I receive a deep cleansing treatment?

This depends on your scalp type, the current weather and the scalp condition, but a general schedule would be:

Balanced scalp: Once a week.

Oily scalp: Once to twice a week.

Dry scalp: Once every one to two weeks.
